Duration:   3  mins

Description

Working with a wet piece of wood for your next project? George Vondriska demonstrates in this woodworking video how to get that wet wood on the lathe using a dummy board for the lathe chuck. By using cyanoacrylate glue or CA Glue, George shows you’ll get a nice, strong adhesion that dries well despite being applied to wet wood.

I really love turning on the lathe. Not just turning on the lathe, but turning on the lathe. And especially like to turn greenwood. Like this piece right here. This is a piece of walnut. It's very wet. Let's see just how wet. Now that's downside up to you. But 30%, 31%. So a lotta moisture in this. Now here's my approach to doing this. I wanna get a dummy board fastened to the back of the walnut. That then is gonna receive my chuck on the lathe. If I use yellow glue, I'm gonna have a curing problem. Because the walnut is so wet. Here's what's so cool. This is the solution. Cyanoacrylate glue, which we just call CA. Is capable of drying, curing, in the presence of moisture. So this is a problem solver for me. By using the right glue for the job. Now what I've done here to get ready. Is I have a circle on the back of my blank that's the same diameter as the dummy board that I'm gonna glue on here. So, get that clean. I'm using medium-density or medium-viscosity CA glue. And burp your bottle. Make sure there's no glue left in the tip. And now using my guide lines, I'm gonna set my dummy board down into that glue. And hold that in place, no clamps required. Because the CA glue dries so fast. We'll give this just a little bit of time to cure. And then put this on the lathe and be able to start our turning. Things are looking pretty good here. I'm in the process of roughing out the walnut. The CA glue really did a great job of binding the wet walnut onto the bone-dry maple dummy board I had here. Now what I'll do, is I get through the turning process here. I'll keep working my way around. I'll work right into that dummy board. When the bowl is complete, I'll be able to cut the dummy board right off the back. So the answer to this process. Wet wood, dry dummy board. Is using CA glue, 'cause it's a glue that will cure in the presence of moisture. And I'm here to tell you, this is plenty moist. It's throwing water right at me as I do the turning. So next time you have a project like this, where you wanna adhere wet wood. Try CA glue, it's the answer to the problem.
