Comparing Aerosol Can Nozzles

George Vondriska
Duration:   2  mins

Description

When selecting an aerosol can to finish your woodworking project, pay special attention to the nozzle on the can. Many nozzles give you a choice for the spray pattern you’ll have, and George Vondriska shows why it’s important. A WoodWorkers Guild of America (WWGOA) original video.

Great video and I am making boxes exactly like this. But where can I get the excellent rotating table featured in the video?

Now, you may not have spray equipment in your shop for applying finishes, but you can get spray equipment very easily. Don't be afraid to use aerosol cans like this to apply clear top coats to your projects. Now, what I want to point out here is that there are spray cans and there are spray cans. Let's have a look first. This is a can of paint. The way that the finish comes out of this is in kind of a cone shape. And in all honesty, it's hard to get a good finish out of that. With this can of lacquer, the nozzle on this is actually adjustable. Now, if you look at the pattern that was provided by this can, it's a much better fan pattern than the cone pattern that came out of that paint can. So the moral out of this story is that some aerosol cans like this one, for top coats, have a nozzle in them on which you can actually control the fan either horizontally or vertically. That makes it a lot easier, especially if you want to spray up and down a project or across a project. So you're going to get a better-quality top coat by looking for an aerosol can that provides that ability to control the fan pattern. Now, with this product, I'm ready to go ahead and work on this project. It is a lacquer-based project. I want to make sure I've got a respirator on. That fan is going to really help me get a nice finish on this box I'm working on.
