A time-tested shop fact: it’s more dangerous to use a dull tool than a sharp tool. The Sorby ProEdge is a very versatile sharpening tool. It works great for lathe chisels, bench chisels, plane irons, etc. If sharpening is convenient and easy for you to do, you’re more likely to do it. That’s going to keep your tools in their optimum condition, and ready to work.
Getting the angle right
It’s critical that you get the exact same angle on your tools each time you sharpen them. If you change the angle you’ll also change the dynamic of how you use the tool. That makes learning to correctly use your tools tough, and especially impacts using lathe chisels. Thankfully the Sorby ProEdge provides lots of accommodations that’ll help you perfectly reproduce angles. A chart of recommended cutting angles is included on the tool, and setting the included table to the right angle is easy.
Sharpening belts, and more
Unlike a grinder that might have two different grit wheels on it, you can get a huge assortment of belts for the ProEdge, from super coarse for grinding to super fine for honing. It’s easy to match the abrasive to exactly what you’re doing, instead of making do. The ProEdge also accepts a buffing wheel as an outboard add-on, providing even more sharpening options.
