    Description

Nearly every woodworker dreams of the wildly figured wood, and would like to showcase some of that treasured material in their projects. If you are fortunate enough to be able to use some highly figured wood in your project, you will want to apply a finish that brings out the best of your beautiful stock. This can be an intimidating moment for many woodworkers, as their expertise in designing and building a beautiful project doesn’t necessarily mean that they have an extensive skill set in finishing wood.

Our expert guest, Rob Johnstone, shares his simple but effective approach for creating the lustrous chatoyance effect in highly figured wood. Rob uses three products in his approach, and each one has a specific role in the process:

Boiled Linseed Oil: The oil penetrates deeply into the wood and provides the instantaneous “grain pop” that tells you that you are on the right path with your finishing effort. Other oil products can be used here as well, including Tung oil, or Danish oil.

Shellac: This product builds up a depth of finish quickly to provide a deep, high quality appearance.

Polyurethane: Poly provides the durability that you want for table top or other pieces that will be subject to liquids or abrasions.

With this arsenal of finishing products and Robs simple approach for applying them, you’ll be ready to turn your next figured wood project into an heirloom. And if you are working with figured wood, you might want to check out some tips for reducing the chip-out on figured material when you are running it through your jointer.
